Why did the French Revolution turn Radical? Do Now: How did the French respond to lack of say in their government?

Radical Days and the Reign of Terror The new French government would go to war against its own citizens as well as many of the nations of Europe.

1.Why did the Legislative Assembly last for less than 1 year? 1.a. money problems – money dropped in value – prices rose c. different factions fought for power b. more food shortages

2. What factions arose in the Assembly? 2. a. right – wanted to turn back the clock c. left – Jacobins – wanted to abolish the monarchy b. center – still wanted moderate reforms

3. Who won the power struggle in the Assembly? 3. left wing radicals – called for new elections and created the National Convention

4. What actions did the Convention take? 4. a. abolished the monarchy – creating a republic e. created the Committee of Public Safety d. executed the king and queen c. seized all lands from nobles and abolished nobility b. allowed all males to vote

5. What was the Committee of Public Safety? 5. a. 12 member committee that used absolute power to save the revolution b. ordered all citizens to join the war effort c. crushed peasant revolts

6. Who was Robespierre? 6. a. leader of Committee b. led a Reign of Terror – executing about 40,000 people from July 1793 – July 1794

7.How did the Convention react to the Reign of Terror? 7. a. feared for their own lives b. executed Robespierre and other radicals

In 1795 moderates produced another constitution, the third since The Constitution of 1795 created a 5 man Directory and a two-house legislature. The Directory ruled as a dictatorship until 1799.
