Presentation transcript:

Earth Science MCA Review Research: With your partner, do the necessary research to complete the topic you were assigned & fill in your topic's slide. Pictures: EVERY topic needs at least one picture that explains your topic & any other questions asked for. Present: Be ready to do a SHORT presentation of your slide at the end of the class--both partners need to present.

Distinguish between a mixture & a pure substance & use physical properties including color, solubility, density, melting point and boiling point to separate mixtures and identify pure substances. Topic #1: Pure Substances & Mixtures Define the following: Density Solubility melting point boiling point How are these properties above, used to tell the difference between a pure substance and a mixture?

Recognize that the Earth is composed of layers, and describe the properties of the layers, including the lithosphere, mantle & core. Topic #2: Earth's Layers Use a picture of Earth's layers (including the lithosphere, mantle, and core) & explain what the properties are of each layer

Correlate the distribution of ocean trenches, mid-ocean ridges & mountain ranges to volcanic and seismic activity. Topic #3--Earth's events & locations Explain how the locations of ocean trenches, mid-ocean ridges & mountain ranges are related to volcanic and seismic activity. Use at least one awesome picture to show this, maybe more!

Recognize that major geological events, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions & mountain building, result from the slow movement of tectonic plates. Topic #4--Movement of Tectonic Plates

Explain how landforms result from the processes of crustal deformation, volcanic eruptions, weathering, erosion and deposition of sediment. Topic #5--Landforms Explain what weathering, erosion, and deposition are & how they change the landscape. Show a great picture for each. A table might help organize this topic!

Explain the roles of weathering, erosion and glacial activity in shaping MN's current landscape. Topic #6--MN's Landscape How did glaciers, weathering and erosion specifically shape MN's landscape? Give specific examples of glacial evidence in MN.

Interpret successive layers of sedimentary rocks and their fossils to infer relative ages of rock sequences, past geologic events, changes in environmental conditions, and the appearance and extinction of life forms. Topic #7--Geologic Layers & Time Which layer is oldest? Put letters on the layers and tell what happened and how you know from youngest to oldest.

Classify & ID rocks and minerals using characteristics including, but not limited to, density, hardness and streak for minerals; and texture and composition for rocks. Topic #8--Rocks & Mineral ID Compare & Contrast rocks and minerals. Explain rock composition and texture. What mineral properties are used to identify minerals and how are they used?

Relate rock composition and texture to physical conditions at the time of formation of Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic rock. Topic #9--Rock Formation Show a rock cycle picture. How do sedimentary rocks form? Explain the processes for the formation of a metamorphic rock. Find a picture of an igneous rock that cooled slowly and explain how you can tell.

Explain how the combination of the Earth's tilted axis and revolution around the sun causes the progression of the seasons. Topic #10--The Reason for Seasons Explain how the combination of the Earth's tilted axis and revolution around the sun causes the progression of the seasons....how/why does fall and spring happen?

Recognize that oceans have a major effect on global climate because water in the oceans holds a large amount of heat. Topic #11: Ocean's affect Climate How do the oceans affect the world's climate?

Explain how heating of the Earth's surface and atmosphere by the sun drives convection within the atmosphere and hydrosphere producing winds, ocean currents and the water cycle, as well as influencing global climate. Topic #12: Winds and Climate Why does wind happen? What and where is the Jet Stream & how does it affect our weather? Explain how convection occurs in the atmosphere to produce winds. What forces form currents in the ocean?

Describe how the composition and structure of the Earth's atmosphere affects energy absorption, climate and the distribution of particulates and gases. Topic #13--Earth's Atmosphere How do radiation, convection, and conduction work together to heat the atmosphere. What is the structure and composition of earth's atmosphere

Analyze changes in wind direction, temperature, humidity and air pressure and relate them to fronts and pressure systems. Topic #14: Weather What weather predictions can be made from the following: increasing barometric pressure decreasing barometric pressure clouds warm front

Relate global weather patterns to patterns in regional and local weather. Topic # 15: Regional & Local Weather Describe the effect of Earth's rotation on winds and ocean currents. (talk about the Coriolis effect) Describe how winds move moisture and heat around the world and produce much of our weather.

Describe the location, composition and use of major water reservoirs on the Earth & the transfer of water among them. Topic #16--Water Where is all of the world's water? How much of the water on Earth is Freshwater?

Describe how the water cycle distributes materials and purifies water. For example: the dissolved gases in rain can change the chemical composition of substances on Earth. Topic #17: The Water Cycle How does the Water cycle work? What is acid rain and how can it affect Earth?
