Biotic Relationships:
Symbiotic Relationships. Symbiosis Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
Population – group of individuals of the same species
Interactions of Organisms Competition Predator-Prey Symbiosis.
Interactions of Living Things Ecology 3. Species Smallest grouping of living based on characteristics – Must be able to produce offspring that can reproduce.
Symbiotic Relationships. What is symbiosis? What it means: Two organisms that live together Temporarily or for a longer time At least one of the organisms.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among species Interactions.
Symbiosis. Populations that live in close physical contact with each other interact in a variety of ways.
Warm Up Can you think of examples of relationships where both people/ organisms benefit? Can you think of examples of relationships where one organism.
Brittany Smith Susan Martin BIOLOGY STANDARD 2.0: –The student will investigate the interactions of organisms within their environment through different.
SYMBIOSIS is the interaction between 2 different organisms where at least one benefits –HOST- usually the LARGER of the 2 organisms –SYMBIONT- usually.
WANTED: Interactions Amongst Organisms. Mutualism, a relationship between two species in which both species benefit. The ox pecker bird, which is seen.
THE NATURE OF ECOLOGY Ecology is a study of connections in nature.

Survival Relationships
Species Interactions. When organisms live together in a community, they interact constantly. These interactions help shape the ecosystem they live in.
Ecological Relationships. Competition and Predation Competition – occurs when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological.
OBJECTIVE: Identify Different Interactions among speciesInteractions.
Ecology Chapter 2. What is Ecology? Ecology is the study of interactions that take place between organisms and their environment. Ex. Bird on a tree limb.
Aim: How do symbiotic relationships differ? DO NOW 1.Describe what you see in this image. 2.Do you think this fish is being harmed? Explain why or why.

Lecture #2 Symbiosis Unit 8: Community Interactions.
Community Interactions Community: Many different species interacting in the same environment. Three types of interactions: – Competition – Predation.
Community Interactions. Community All the living organisms in an area at a certain time All the living organisms in an area at a certain time.
Competition Intraspecific: between organisms of the same species Interspecific: between organisms of different species. Predation: when one organism feeds.
SYMBIOSIS is the interaction between 2 different organisms living together in an ecosystem.

Learning Target: To justify types of symbiotic relationships February 18 th, 2015  Do-Now: Using your inference skills and observations describe the adaptations of the three animals below  Come in quietly  Take your assigned seat  TAKE OUT SCIENCE FAIR CHECKPOINTS  Put tonight’s HW into agenda  Complete the Do-Now Picture 1- Pangolin Picture 2- Yellow MOTH. Picture 3- Banded Dart Frog

T-Chart Pictures Adaptations

PARASITISM  Is a relationship where the parasite HARMS the host  For example, the tick in the picture above is a parasite. It benefits by extracting blood from its human host. The human is harmed because EXIT

 Is a relationship between two species, where both organisms benefit and neither is harmed.  The relationship can be long or short term.  For example, in the photo above, the host flower benefits by being pollinated by the traveling butterfly. The symbiont butterfly benefits from the nectar that it extracts from the flower. Mutualism EXIT

COMMENSALISM  Is a relationship two species, where the symbiont benefits and the host is neither helped nor harmed.  The symbiont benefits by receiving transportation, housing, and/or nutrition.  For example, in the photo above the symbiont barnacles receive transportation from the host whale. The host whale is neither helped nor harmed by the barnacles. EXIT

EXTRA PRACTICE ACTIVITY In the following activity, you will be given a picture scenario. Identify and select the symbiotic relationship (parasitism, mutualism, or commensalism) represented in the picture. EXIT

In this photo the “cleaner fish” receives nourishment by dining off of the parasites and remaining food debris in the eel’s mouth. Is this an example of… PARASITISM MUTUALISM COMMENSALISM HELPEXIT

Clownfish are frequently found in the tentacles of sea anemones. Sea anemones capture their prey by paralyzing them with their tentacles. However, the clownfish produces a mucus that prevents the tentacles from harming it. By dwelling amongst the tentacles the clownfish receives a protected home. This relationship is an example of … PARASITISMMUTUALISMCOMMENSALISM HELPEXIT

The birds in the picture are munching on tiny parasitic insects located on the rhino. The relationship between the birds and the rhino is an example of… EXIT PARASITISM MUTUALISM COMMENSALISM HELP

Lampreys are primitive fish with limited digestive systems. They attach to and feed on the body fluids of fish with more advanced digestive systems, often leading to the death of the host fish. This relationship is an example of… EXIT PARASITISM MUTUALISM COMMENSALISM HELP

Orchids grow on the branches of high trees. These orchids get more water and sunlight than those on the ground. The tree is unaffected by the orchid’s presence. This relationship is an example of… EXIT PARASITISM MUTUALISM COMMENSALISM HELP

Time to show what you know  First, we will listen to the Ecology Song  After you will start your take home quiz using your notebook and workbook. If it is not finished it is HW
