These changes are called METAMORPHOSIS. The butterfly’s METAMORPHOSIS happens in FOUR STAGES. Check out the First Stage

STAGE TWO: The Caterpillar  Also known as the Larva  A worm-like creature  HUNGRY! HUNGRY Caterpillar!  Eats all the time!!!  Grows & Grows very quickly  Becoming too big for its skin, it sheds or gets rid of its old skinsheds  Gets new skin 4 OR MORE times while growing  Caterpillars do not stay in this stage very long. STAGE THREE: The Chrysalis  Also known as the pupa  When the caterpillar is done growing, it makes a chrysalis  Chrysalis is brown or green  Why do you think that is? Check your thinking.Check your thinking.  Resting & Changing Stage or Phase  Caterpillar changes into a butterfly

THE FOURTH & FINAL STAGE: The Butterfly Adult or Imago  Chrysalis opens & the butterfly comes out  The butterfly first comes out  Wings are  damp & soft  folded against its body  Butterfly is extremely TIRED  So the butterfly rests.  Once the butterfly has rested, it will be ready to start flying.
