Faculty Learning Communities Outcomes and Highlights IT Staff Support Classroom Sets Pedagogy + Technology iPads for Teaching and Learning

Why a faculty learning community? FLCs promote the goals of teaching and learning centers by: building a community of people interested in issues of teaching and learning enabling cross-disciplinary conversations and collaborations about teaching supporting and encouraging good teaching

Why a faculty learning community? providing an opportunity to give and receive feedback about teaching in a safe, supportive environment facilitating the dissemination of best practices beyond the FLC to the wider university community

Why an iPad FLC? The iPad FLC promoted the use of innovative teaching practices by the faculty participants by: creating the expectation that the participants were going to try something new in their classes enabling the participants to share their knowledge and ideas and define common goals establishing a safe, supportive environment in which even “failures” were seen as informative

Challenges Being first is hard! No research out there Unexpected wireless problems Where do you start? Fighting the design? iPad was designed as a personal device iPad was designed more as a consumption device

Successes – Visual learning Geologic mapping The iPads helped students’ “learning associated with visual integration of spatial sets of data”. Dr. Simon Brassell Geological Sciences

Successes – Visual learning Biomechanics iPad served as a mini-lab to allow students to analyze and understand human movement Jake Streepey Physical Education

Successes – Visual learning Making thinking visible Large lecture class Students worked in small groups to sketch the process “Voted” with clickers Joe Pomerening Biology

Successes - Collaboration Mind mapping apps iPads promoted collaborative learning and knowledge creation in Communication Theory course Jonathan Rossing Communication

Putting it together

It’s (still) all about the apps… “Productivity” apps seem to be best suited for higher education We need app developers to sit down with faculty members Finding apps is still really difficult What’s the next big thing after wireless?

Supporting AND Partnering Supports Partnering Empowering People

Action 64 …provide resources and support for experimentation with and implementation of a range of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning….

Action 69 ….evaluate, implement, and support appropriate compact, portable devices that connect students and instructors in ways that enable lean or rich communication, collaboration, and interaction using voice, audio, text, and video.

Action 25 …..support and pursue research into information technology itself. IT professionals and faculty should seek partnership opportunities for scholarly publication and invention disclosure that document meritorious research and discovery…..
