Information on Da Gama Vasco Da Gama was born in 1460 in Sines, Portugal. He was the first successful sailor to sail around the tip of Africa and arrive in India. Da Gama’s father, Estavao Da Gama, was also an explorer.

Family members of Vasco Da Gama Estavao, Vasco’s father, was supposed to make the trip around Africa to India, but died before completing the journey. Christopher Da Gama, Vasco’s son, was a Portuguese, who led an army in Ethiopia against Imam Ahmad Gragn. He victorious in 4 battles, until he was captured and killed in the fifth battle. Estevao Da Gama, Vasco’s youngest son, became Viceroy of India.

The Trip Around Africa to India His stops on the African and Indian coasts. He stopped at St. Helena Bay, Mossel Bay, Natal, Mombasa, Malandi, Calicut, and Goa.

Rounding the Cape of Africa On December 16 th, the fleet passed the White River, the river where Dias stopped and turned around. Since it was almost Christmas, Da Gama gave the coast that they were passing the name ‘Natal’, Christmas in Portuguese.

Mombasa and Malindi Near Kenya, Da Gama and his men resorted to piracy, and attacked Arab merchant ships. Da Gama was the first to visit the port of Mombasa. In Malindi, Da Gama contracted Ibn Majid, an Arab navigator, that took them to Calicut, on the southwest bank of India.

First Sight of India On May 20, 1498, Da Gama and his crew landed in India. After they had landed, There were violent negotiations with Zamorin, the local leader.

Return Da Gama returned to Portugal in 1499, and he was richly rewarded as the man who brought to life the plan that had taken 80 years. Da Gama was labeled “Admirable of the Indian Ocean” and Dom (count) by Manuel 1.

Second and Third Voyages On 12 February 1502, Da Gama sailed a second time with 20 Portuguese warships. He returned in September He left for India again in 1524 for his third and final voyage to India. Not long after he returned to Goa, he contracted malaria and died of it.

Summary Was born in and sailed for Portugal. Made 3 voyages to India. Died of malaria in Cochin, India on Christmas Eve, His remains were brought back to Portugal in The Monestary of Hieronymites in Belém was erected for him after his voyage to India.
