The Power of Servant Leadership

“You can accomplish anything in life, provided that you do not mind who gets the credit.” - President Harry S. Truman

“But whoever would be great among you, must be your servant.” - Jesus of Nazareth

Leadership Defined: Option 1: “Leadership is Influence”

Leadership Defined: Option 2: “Leadership is influence that moves people toward an intended goal or purpose and is executed with humility and integrity.” "If you do not know where you are going, every road will get you nowhere." - Henry Kissinger

What Makes A Great Leader: - Goals (Vision) - Integrity - Humility

What Makes A Great Leader: Humility in Leadership- A Leader is able to put his/her own agenda aside and put the needs of the organization and others ahead of themselves.

The Great Leadership Paradox: We typically view successful leaders as demanding, top-down authoritarians who employ excessive control over people and the organization in order to gain the intended outcome.

The Great Leadership Paradox: The truth is, servant has proven to be the most successful leadership style in the most successful US businesses in recent history. Larry Spears, who served for 17 years as the head of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, identified ten characteristic of servant leaders in the writings of Greenleaf. The ten characteristics are listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of others, and building community.

The Great Leadership Paradox: Servant leadership is a highly effective leadership model. ・ concept was developed by Robert K. Greenleaf in ・ Servant leadership is all about people and relationships. ・ Servant leadership isn’t about positions and titles, it is an attitude that says people and relationships are important, valuable and essential to our success. ・ Servant leaders recognize that the people producing the widget are more valuable than the widget itself. ・ Servant leaders understand that the greatest success is achieved when tasks are accomplished while building healthy relationships with people.

Level 5 Leadership In his book “Good to Great” author Jim Collins researched the top Fortune 500 companies to determine why some where more successful than others. His research focused on those companies that out performed the market 7 times consistently over a 15 year period.

Level 5 Leadership The result of his research found that there were 11 companies that met his stringent criteria. Once the criteria was set he researched the characteristics that set these companies apart from all of the others

Level 5 Leadership He found that these 11 companies had the following things in common: - They had the right people in key leadership roles - They confronted the brutal facts about their company - The only focused on what they could be best at. - They had a culture of discipline - They used technology as an accelerator - They knew how to use momentum - They were all led by Level 5 Leaders

Level 5 Leadership Characteristics of Level 5 (or servant leadership): - Displays a Paradoxical Mix of Personal Humility and Professional Will - Sets Successors Up for Success - Displays a Compelling Modesty - Fanatically Driven to Make the Company Great - Gives Praise when things Go Right and Takes the Blame when things Go Wrong

Level 5 Leadership : Displays a Paradoxical Mix of Personal Humility and Professional Will

Level 5 Leadership : Sets others up for Success "As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others." - Bill Gates

Level 5 Leadership : Sets others up for Success - Importance of Mentoring: - Be a mentor - Be mentored - Formula for Mentoring - 3, 12, Multitudes - 3 Inner Circle (VP’s) - 12 Outer Circle (Managers) - Multitudes (Employee’s)

Level 5 Leadership : Displays a Compelling Modesty “I don't have any desire to buy a small island or a yacht. That's what gets these other CEO's into trouble.” Sam Walton

Level 5 Leadership : Fanatically Driven to Make the Company Great

Level 5 Leadership : Gives Praise when things Go Right and Takes the Blame when things Go Wrong "My research debunks the myth that many people seem to have... that you become a leader by fighting your way to the top. Rather, you become a leader by helping others to the top. Helping your employees is as important, and many times more so, than trying to get the most work out of them." ~ William Cohen, The Stuff of Heroes: The Eight Universal Laws of Leadership.
