Your ticket to a successful future!

 Students will be able to assess the importance of goal setting and demonstrate writing goals.

- J.C. Penney

 “If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.” -Albert Einstein

 The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime - setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making.

◦ Attitude: Is there any way that you behave that upsets you? ◦ Career and Financial: What level do you want to reach in your career? How much do you want to earn by what stage? ◦ Education: Is there any knowledge you want to acquire? What information and skills will you need to achieve other goals? ◦ Family and Home: Do you want to be a parent? Do you want to keep close family ties? ◦ Physical: What steps are you going to take to achieve good health? ◦ Spiritual: Are you living your morals?

 Research shows that writing down your goals is an import piece in achieving your goals. When you write goals, make sure they are SMART.  S-specific  M-measurable  A-action oriented  R-realistic  T-timely

 “I will be rich someday” is a wish. “I will make $150,000 a year by the time I’m 28” is a goal  “I want to lose weight” is a wish. “I will lose 10 pounds by Christmas” is a goal

 Not “I will ‘try’ to stop biting my fingernails,” but “I will grow my fingernails out”  Not “I will stop smoking,” or “I will not smoke,” but I will take good care of my lungs. (In the first two examples, “stop” and “not” are negative

 Values: Beliefs and practices in your life that are very important to you. Many things influence your values such as family, friends, teachers, church, work, and more.  Goals: A destination. Something you want or need by taking certain steps. It gives you direction for your actions.  Tip-Your goals should reflect your values. Both should be unique and meaningful to you.

 Short term goals: Has a time frame of up to three months. Example, I am going to get a A on my first Independent Living test.  Intermediate goals: take place between three months and 1 year. Example, I am going to get a B or better in Independent Living.  Long term goals: Are longer than a year. Example, I am going to travel to 14 different countries before I turn 25.

 Clear conception of what you want  Strong confidence that you can attain your goals  Focused concentration on what it takes to reach your goals  Stubborn consistency in pursuing your goal  An emotional commitment to the importance of what you’re doing  Good character to guide us  Capacity to enjoy the process along the way.

 Goal setting is an important method of: ◦ Deciding what is important for you to achieve in your life ◦ Separating what is important from what is irrelevant ◦ Motivating yourself to achievement ◦ Building your self-confidence based on measured achievement of goals  You should allow yourself to enjoy the achievement of goals and reward yourself.  If you do not already set goals, now is a great time to start!

 “When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” -Confucius

 You will need: ◦ 2 SMART goals ◦ 2 pieces of florescent paper ◦ A paper clip ◦ Scissors ◦ Tape or glue Directions: ◦ Pick out 2 of your top SMART goals. ◦ Show them to me for points. ◦ Cut out a star about the size of your hand. Write a goal on each star. ◦ Tape a paper clip to the top of your star. Show Mrs. DuBois your goals and star for a grade. ◦ Hang your star from the lights!
