STAR and Accelerated Reader Staff Development Day Salmon River Central School K. Virginia Bond, March 19,

Reading Renaissance company that develops this software

The Primary Goal……… is to IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION! Running Records check fluency, STAR/AR check comprehension!

Reading Education has 3 levels A. Daily Task Level * AR daily, quick feedback B. Classroom Achievement Level * STAR Early and STAR Reader C. High-Stakes Level * NYS & National Assessments

3 Major Components STAR Early Literacy (PK-1) STAR Reader (2-12) Accelerated Reader (PK-12)

How to Start? 1. Schedule Time for Reading Practice (Daily Reading Time) 2. Find ZPD (STAR) 3. Check the TOPS Report (AR) 4. Review Diagnostic Report as needed

What’s ZPD and how do I get it? Zone of Proximal Development Range where the optimal learning takes place ( ) ZPD is set in the STAR Reading quiz

STAR Reader 2.0 1st part of setting level Closure exercise focusing on vocabulary

STAR Reader Helps identify initial ZPD “Computer adaptive” means quick results Keeps track of class progress throughout the year

STAR Reading quizzes Should be taken in lab setting as full class Takes approx minutes Results can be printed separately Diagnostic Report

Next…. Check STAR Summary Report for number of students at each level Check your library collection Label each book with its level (NOTE: Fountas & Pennell levels do not match AR levels)

What’s after STAR? Test student reading comprehension levels Start choosing books that are at the student’s individual ZPD Remember: Each student is different!

Accelerated Reader Software program that tests a student’s comprehension on a specific book that they have read

What is Accelerated Reader? 3 Basic steps: 1. Select a book 2. Read the book (or have it read to them) 3. Take a quiz on the book TOPS Report will print when student is finished

TOPS Report T he O pportunity to P raise a S tudent Automatically prints after every quiz Presents data on quiz just taken and cumulative data

Adjusting ZPD’s Monitor quiz results Average score of 85-92% means student is working in the good learning zone. If results are below 85%, go shorter...

Tips Shorter before easier, longer before harder Up the level, not the points You decide the best way to use the program

STAR Early Literacy Software for PK, K and 1 Focuses on listening skills Levels are: Emergent, Transitional & Probable Reader

STAR Early Literacy Reports Print out with 4 columns Shows 25%, 50%, 75% Shows strengths and weaknesses

Abbreviations GE = Grade Equivalent TOPS = The Opportunity to Praise a Student TWI = To/ With/ Independently ZPD= Zone of Proximal Development F/BF = Fiction / Non-Fiction
