Human Resource RESEARCH AND ACADEMICS PKU is proud of its outstanding faculty. It includes 52 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 7 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Projects Peking University attaches great importance to research in both basic and applied sciences. Funds Peking University received about 594 million RMB for scientific research in 2005. Both MOST and NSFC are important sources of funds for scientific research at Peking University. Important Prizes Peking University won 22 National Prizes in Science & Technology from 2001 to 2005, including 1 National Top S&T Prize, 11 National Natural Science Prizes and 10 National S&T Development Prizes. Papers and Patents The quality of PKU’s papers has improved in recent years as well as their quantity, so PKU’s influence in science is becoming increasingly felt. From 2001 to 2005, PKU’s scientists have published almost 8,000 SCI papers with PKU as the primary institution, including 2 in SCIENCE, 3 in NATURE, 7 in PNAS, 26 in JACS, 11 in PRL and 1 in Lancet. In terms of cited times of papers, PKU has led all other universities in China in the recent 10 years. Average Impact Factor of papers in 2005 was 2.03.

Zhu Qiang University Librarian University Library Peking University Library, founded in 1902, is one of the leading research libraries in China, combining a long and distinguished history with a vibrant mission of service to the University and the nation. The new library building, opened at the end of 1998, is located on the bank of the beautiful Weiming Lake. The total building area amounts to 51,000 square meters, with 4,000 seats. The collection capacity has reached 6,500,000 items, making it the biggest university library in Asia.
School Library The library of School of Government is middle-sized, collecting the document resources with the specialized features. The school library provides service mainly to teachers, undergraduates and postgraduates in our school, but also to the domestic and foreign visiting scholars and researchers in related fields.
Study period and Academic Schedule The normal period of study for each program is as follows: 4 years for undergraduate degrees, 3 years (or in some cases, 2 years) for master's degrees, and 4 years for doctoral degrees. Students may, in particular cases, reduce or extend the duration of study upon application. Peking University divides every academic year into spring and autumn semesters, with the latter marking the commencement of the academic year. The autumn semester starts in September and ends in January of the following year while the spring semester begins in February and ends in June. There will be a winter and summer vacation every year. The summer vacation usually lasts 2 months and there are various summer vacation courses available for students. The winter vacation lasts 4 weeks and normally follows the schedule of Chinese New Year. Programs International students have the following options of study at Peking University: (1) Undergraduate or graduate degree-granting programs; (2) Visiting students program (non-degree granting) (3) Pre-university program; (4) Short-term language courses or Chinese studies programs. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, with valid passport, above the age of 18, and should abide by Chinese law and the regulations of Peking University. They should also respect Chinese social customs.
Undergraduate program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4 to 6 years and fulfill the designated number of credits. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the bachelor's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee. Master's Program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 2-3 years, fulfill the designated number of credits, complete the master's thesis and defend of it in front of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the Master's degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee. Doctorate Program: Students are required to complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the regulation of the Degree Committee.
