Short overview 312 t sq km 38,5 m inhabitants –population is declining due to negative natural growth rate and emigration Member of the EU bordering with Russia, Ukraine and Belarus Unitary country with 3 tiers of elected regional and local authorities At regional level – elected and governmental representatives

The Diagnosis Low level of GDP per capita in comparison with EU average –Poland average 52% of EU 25 GDP per capita in PPS (2005) –All 16 NUTS II regions below 75% threshold, 4 of them at the bottom of the European list Growing disparities – important but.... –Mazowieckie (Warsaw region) one of the fastest growing regions in Europe (but no longer the fastest!) with a speed of 10 pp between (72,8% in 2003), –Rural regions in danger of falling down - no convergence at all in 3 regions: Opolskie, Lubelskie, Podkarpackie, –Eastern part of Poland is further lagging behind: 33,2%-35,7% and no convergence at all!
