Registered Teacher Criteria Workshops 2010 Principles to Consider Consistency through education and communication Assess in context of teachers’ daily work Systems/evidence required to assess criteria should be rigorous and robust Need to show competence across the criteria Above all collection of evidence should support professional learning, not compliance, and be a career long habit.

Registered Teacher Criteria Workshops 2010 Appraisal Who appraises teachers in your setting? What do they appraise? What evidence do they gather? What skills are needed by an appraiser? How are they acquired? How do you gain consistency in judgments about teachers? (5 minutes )

Registered Teacher Criteria Workshops 2010 Dr Cathy Wylie NZCER The survey indicated that where teachers ‘strongly agree’ that their school had useful appraisal systems that focused on learning they also ‘strongly agreed’ that: School goals really did guide their day to day work They had sufficient time to work together to plan their teaching and discuss student work Departmental meetings were often used to discuss student achievement and strategies to improve it where needed That good teachers were retained at the school. (‘Focusing leadership on adult learning: the secondary school challenge’– based on data from a 2009 national survey of NZ secondary school teachers).

Registered Teacher Criteria Workshops 2010 PMS Guidelines (Ministry of Education) Aspects that need to be appraised: –Teaching responsibilities (e.g. planning, teaching, assessment, curriculum) –School/ECE wide responsibilities (e.g. contribution to curriculum leadership, pastoral care, community relationships) –Management responsibilities (e.g. planning, decision making, professional leadership, resource management).
