Core Beliefs Using an index card and the DISD Core Beliefs select a Core Belief to insert into the following sentence stem. Curriculum resources relate to Core Belief number 5 because… Curriculum resources relate to Core Belief number _______ because ___________ Our main purpose is to improve student academic achievement. Effective instruction makes the most difference in student academic performance. There is no excuse for poor quality instruction. With our help, at risk students will achieve at the same rate as non-at risk students. Staff members must have a commitment to children and a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. With this Core Belief activity provide participants with an index card; allow a 30s – 1m for reading of the Core Belief. Instruct participants to complete the sentence frame. Participants will have 1 min to complete their sentence stems. After completion of sentence frame, participants will share out to large group. Total time for this activity is 5mins. Word splash Explain what they are to do. Word Splash (This is a hidden slide) – a list of curriculum tool for RLA will appear. Before viewing the next slide, instruct participants to put their pen/pencil down and only use their eyes. After viewing the word splash, participants will have 30 seconds to write down all that they remembered seeing. Using the construction pictures on your table meet with your group, take your word splash index card. Participants will meet in a group of four. Within the group each participant will become partner A and partner B. Each person will choose 1 curriculum tool from their list and will have 1 minute to share all that they know about their chosen curriculum tool with their A/B partner; each partner will have 1 minute totaling 2 minutes for each to discuss. At this point instruct participants that they have 30 seconds, when you say go, to write down what they can remember from the Word Splash. At the end of 30s; Circle one Curriculum Tool that you feel you are an expert in using and can teach someone about it. (Thinking) Now with notecard in hand, have all the cones meet as a group (do this with each picture). With participants in groups of four, they will then pair off as A/B partners and share their expertise of their chosen curriculum tool with their A/B partner; each partner will have 1 minute totaling 2 minutes for each to discuss. (Pair-Share) MRS – Think-Pair-Share *This activity will help active prior knowledge and as you walk around you will be able to hear any misconceptions about these tools; which will help you with your decision of the tools.

Students understand new vocabulary and use it when reading and writing. Students are expected to: (E) use a dictionary, a glossary, or a thesaurus (printed or electronic) to determine the meanings, syllabication, pronunciations, alternate word choices, and parts of speech of words. (RS) Students will demonstrate dictionary skills. Determine correct meaning of a new word Demonstrate how to locate the pronunciation, syllabication and part of speech of a new word. Students will demonstrate how to use a glossary. Determine meaning of new word as used in the text. Students will demonstrate how to use a thesaurus. Select alternate word choices for a given word. Participants will complete the Where Would You Go? Sheet to gain a better understanding of the Curriculum tools that were just discussed and introduced. *write the answers on an index card major concepts for the 6 weeks? Teacher’s Corner? DOL Choose one of the 3 curriculum tools shared and write 3 ways you can use your chosen tool to assist your teachers/campus plan their instructional calendars for the first six weeks.
