What is Metabolic rate?  Humans are made of lots of cells.  Each cell carries out lots of chemical reactions including respiration (which releases energy from food) and making proteins.  Together, these chemical reactions are known as the metabolism.  The rate at which these chemical reactions go on is the metabolic rate.
