The Internet Internet (aka the Net) Usage –More than half a billion users Most common uses –World Wide Web and

History 1969: ARPANET –Linked scientists and academic researchers 1986: NSFnet connected to ARPANET Together the two became the Internet Until 1995 –NSFnet handled most traffic –1995: terminated its network and returned to a research network

The Internet Today Public, Cooperative, and Independent –World Wide Web Consortium sets standards Internet 2 –Focus is on improving current internet –Develops and tests advanced technologies Professionals able to communicate over long distances

Connecting Dial-up –Modem and telephone line Cable modem –Through cable television network DSL and ISDN –Copper telephone lines

Accessing Access provider –Free or for a fee Internet Service Provider (ISP) –Regional or national access Online Service Provider (OSP) –Internet access plus member only features Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) –Wireless modems and mobile devices

IP Address –Unique number, identifies each connected computer Domain name –Text version of IP Address DNS server –Translates domain name into IP address

World Wide Web Components WWW –Worldwide collection of electronic documents Web page –Each single document Web address (URL) –Unique address for each web page

Web Browser –Allows users to access and view web pages Web Server –Computer that delivers web pages to your computer Link –Built-in connection to related web page

Searching for Information Search engine –Program that finds web pages and web sites Search text –Typed keywords in search engine’s text box Hits –Web pages that contain the search text Web Site –Collection of related web pages and associated items

Types of Web Sites Portal –Offers variety of services from one location News –Contains newsworthy material Informational –Contains factual information Business/Marketing –Promotes or sells products or services

Evaluating a Web Site Not all information is true and accurate! What to look for: –Affiliation –Audience –Authority –Content –Currency –Design –objectivity

Web Page Multimedia Multimedia –Combines text with graphics, animation, audio, video, and/or virtual reality Graphic –Digital representation of non-text information –Ex: drawing, chart, photograph Animation –Appearance of motion

Web Page Communication – transmission of messages and files via the computer network FTP ( File Transfer Protocol) –An Internet standard that permits file uploading and downloading with other computers Newsgroup –an online area where users have written about a certain subject Message Board –a popular Web-based type of discussion group

Communication Continued Mailing List – a group of names and addresses given a single name so all can receive the message Chat Rooms –A location on the internet server that permits users to chat or conduct real-time typed conversations Instant Messaging –Real-time internet communications service that notifies you when one or more people are online

Netiquette Netiquette or Internet Etiquette –a code of acceptable behaviors to be followed on the Internet. Rules of Netiquette –Keep messages short –Be polite –Do not assume material is accurate or up to date –Never read someone’s private

What is Web Publishing? Web publishing is the development and maintenance of Web Pages. Webmaster or Web developer maintains a Web using software products Five major steps to web publishing

Plan a Website Identify the purpose of the website Characteristics of the people who would want to visit the website Determine ways to differentiate your website from others

Analyze and Design a Web Site Determine specific way to meet the goals identified in planning Design layout –Text, graphics, audio, video, and virtual reality Obtain required hardware
