Following is the proof of Rome being a civilization.

Writing The Romans adopted the Etruscan alphabet which was adopted from the Greek alphabet. They also wrote in all caps.

Religion Greek religion greatly influenced Romans’ ideas about Gods. Their beliefs changed as they came in contact with other religions. Christianity would eventually become their official religion.

Stable Food Supply The Romans mainly ate bread, beans, and meats. The amount of food that families got depended on their wealth.

Social Structure The quality of your home depended on your wealth as well. Rich people lived in big homes that stood side by side. Poor ones lived in small dark apartments.

Technology The Romans used many Greek designs for their own building. They eventually learned to use concrete to build huge buildings like the Coliseum.

Government The ultimate source of Roman law was the Emperor. A judge once said “Whatever pleases the Emperor, is law.”

Art The Romans greatly admired Greek art and borrowed some directly from Greek culture. Pottery was most valued for it’s usefulness and beauty.

Here is the proof of Rome being an empire.

Did It Start From Scratch? Rome did not start from scratch, it started as a republic and developed into an Empire during 509B.C.E – 44B.C.E.

Strong Leaders/Armies Rome’s huge armies and leaders allowed them to expand as they won battles such as the Punic wars, and the conquering of Italy.

Developed Systems Most people in Rome lived in unsafe areas with crime and disease. Rich leaders gave food and provided entertainment for the poor. This was to keep the poor ones from starting a revolt.

Expanded To Share Ideas When Rome won battles and conquered new areas, they could expand to different places where they could share ideas with others.

Had Religions, but allowed others Rome initially had their own Gods such as Zeus or Aphrodite, but they also allowed other religions like Christianity which, eventually became their official religion.

Declined For Different Reasons Rome fought many wars and after being nearly destroyed, they decide to start over. In 476B.C.E Roman Emperor Romulus was over thrown by German leader Odoacer.

Synthesis In conclusion, Rome is classified as an empire because it didn’t start from scratch, had strong leaders with powerful armies, had systems to manage things, expanded to share ideas with others, had established religions but allowed others, and also declined for different reasons. This is important because as an empire, Rome had a big impact on things like religion, (spreading Christianity). By learning about Rome, people can learn about how things started and what happened in the past, which can help us learn about the present.

Fun Facts What was daily life like for adults? Men needed to provide food for their family in richer family's has been often well paid jobs. Poor family's both men and woman had to work in order to support their family's. What was daily life like for children? Roman babies were born at home. The Roman’s only kept strong, healthy babies. If the husband did not approve the baby would be left to die outside. A good luck charm called a bulla was placed around the baby's neck. Children wore the bulla throughout their childhood. What types of food were eaten here? Bread, Beans, Spices, Veggies, Cheese, and Meat. For drinks Water with herbs and honey. Porridge and bread were usually eaten for breakfast. What was the architecture like? Greek architecture had a big influence on the Romans. The Greeks had temples made from marble as homes for their Gods. The Romans used many Greek designs as their own for public buildings. Eventually, they would learn to use concrete for bigger structures.
