Cell Analogy: Pizza Shop Amy Klezek 3rd hour

Cell Membrane In the cell In the pizza shop- walls and doors The cell membrane is in plant and animal cells. The function of the cell membrane is to control what materials come in and out of the cell. The outside walls and doors of the pizza shop are like the cell membrane because the doors let people in and out, unlike the walls which keeps things from getting in and out of the shop.

Cytoplasm In the cell In the pizza shop- waiting area The cytoplasm is in prokaryote and eukaryote cells. It is the jelly like material inside the cell membrane. The waiting area is like the cytoplasm because it is the space in between the other parts of the shop.

Nucleus In the cell In the pizza shop- manager’s office Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus. The nucleus is the control center of the cell with DNA and is important for the functioning of the rest of the organelles in the cell. The manager’s office is like the nucleus because it is where information for the manager and the rest of the workers comes in and is to be told to everyone.

Endoplasmic Reticulum In the cell In the pizza shop- kitchen The endoplasmic reticulum is in plant and animal cells. It is the site of protein synthesis. The pizza is made in the kitchen, similar to how the proteins are made in the endoplasmic reticulum.

Ribosomes In the cell In the pizza shop- oven Ribosomes are in all cells. They help the production of proteins with protein synthesis. The oven finishes the making of the pizza, and it is similar to a ribosome because it is making something useful for the rest of the shop.

Nucelolus In the cell In the pizza shop- manager A nucleolus is in plant and animal cells. The nucleolus is inside of the nucleus and makes ribosomes. The manager controls the shop and the other workers. His office is the manager’s office(the nucleus).

Mitochondria In the cell In the pizza shop- furnace The mitochondria is in eukaryotic cells. It makes energy available for the rest of the cell. The furnace makes energy for the rest of the shop to work, the lights, the oven, and the phone.

Golgi Body In the cell In the pizza shop- boxing line and pizza deliverer The golgi body is in plant and animal cells. Its function is to modify proteins and package them to be distributed out of the cell. The pizza shop packages, or boxes, the pizzas, to be given to customers. The pizza deliverer distributes them to customers.

Vacuole In the cell In the pizza shop- warming oven The vacuole is in plant and animal cells. It is for temporary storage of materials in the cell. The warming oven is for temporary storage of the pizzas until the customer comes to pick it up.
