Students will begin to understand checks and balances and their part within the control of government. Process/Skills: Through the integration of technology, students will be able to run their own government online. Through learning content knowledge, students will process and apply the skills they learned to run their own government. Values/Dispositions: Students will understand the value of the three branches of government.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: The Power of Three Branches will cover all topics that revolve around the three branches of the government within the United States. By the end of this unit, students will understand the role of each branch within the government. Topics that will be discusses include the executive, judicial, and legislative branches, check and balances, as well as the integration of multiple forms of technology. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 14.B.1 Identify the different levels of government as local, state and national. National – NCSS Themes Power, Identity, and Governance Civic Ideals and Practices

Objective

Using the Delicious Bookmarks, students will be able to view resources that explain each of the three branches of government. This resource allows for student discovery as well as ease for finding information. The content is identified very easily for student access. Using another bookmark, students can access the QuizStar link to take an assessment quiz made by the teacher. This allows for quick assessment for the teacher. The instructor will know where each student stands and what the class could work on as a whole. Objective

Intuitive

Using the Red Delicious Bookmark, students will create a graphic organizer on their intuition or instinct of the knowledge they have previously learned in other categories. Center Bubble: The Three Branches of Government Three Circles off of the Center Bubble: Judicial, Executive, Legislative Off of this should be factual information of each branch that the students have learned. Intuitive

Positive/Strengths

Positive/Strengths Using the Yellow Delicious Bookmark, the students can view an online YouTube video. This video is entertaining and well as educational. The students will grasp concepts of the three branches of government as well as checks and balances. This video identifies the balance between the three branches as a positive to the governmental system.

Negatives/Weaknesses

Using the Black Delicious Bookmark, students can access an awesome online game. The website provides clear instructions for the students to follow. Go through the website as a class together before allowing students to access on their own. The students are able to choose their legislative values as well as executive branch issues that they feel are important. After these issues are addressed, the class can act as each branch, attend town hall meetings, create bills, and many other things that have been learned throughout this unit. The students will understand how difficult the government may be and the many problems and challenges they face. Negatives/Weaknesses

Creative

Creative This smartboard activity is great for the entire classroom involvement. There are many different options for the teacher to get all students involved in the topic at hand. Clicking buttons, pulling over tabs, inserting words, etc. This is a great review for students and to check for understanding. Students will see an option for creativity from the teacher as well as a new idea of technology integration within the classroom.

Thinking About Thinking

In groups of three, students will work together to create a Prezi presentation. Using the information they have learned from the entire unit, the students will create an action plan. Using this action plan, they will process and focus on the key details they have learned. Taking account of this, they will then implement their resources and knowledge into a Prezi presentation where each of the three students will become an expert on one of the three branches. After completion of the Prezi presentations, the students will all showcase their final work to the classroom.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources: Assessment: White Hat: Students will be assessed by their work on the online quiz at QuizStar. Red Hat: Students will be assessed by the content they present on their bubbl.us production. Was the student on task? Was there factual details provided? Yellow Hat: Students will be assessed by their writing. Was there sufficient detail available? Were the comments positives? Black Hat: Students will be assessed by their cooperation and participation while playing the branches game. Green Hat: Students will be assessed by their group participation during the smartboard activity. Was the student engaged? Did the student participate? Blue Hat: Students will be assessed by their group collaboration and participation while creating a Prezi presentation. Was the Prezi informational? Did the student’s each present a branch of the government? Online Resources:
