Ultimate goal of the project Safety Net Dental Clinics (SNDCs) need to find a balance between their Public Health mission and healthy business practices so as to not jeopardize their own sustainability

ANTHEM FOUNDATION OF OHIO ORAL HEALTH CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT Phase 1 Prepare a practice assessment tool/pre-visit questionnaire consisting of key indicators and data elements; Pilot test the assessment tool by having each participating safety net provider fill out the questionnaire; Finalize the assessment tool based upon the responses from the practices and the steering committee

ANTHEM FOUNDATION OF OHIO ORAL HEALTH CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT Phase II Site visit with each participating program to gain a better understanding of each program’s unique circumstances. oInterviews with key employees oFacility tours and oFinal data collection. Prepare an assessment of each practice Evaluate and finalize the assessment tool

ANTHEM FOUNDATION OF OHIO ORAL HEALTH CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT Phase III Work with the participating Safety Net practices to do the following: prepare practice-specific action plans to improve their efficiency and financial sustainability Assure complete understanding of the program assessment and recommendations Prepare practice-specific action plans on which to base future funding requests Prepare practice-specific funding requests

ANTHEM FOUNDATION OF OHIO ORAL HEALTH CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT To make a SNDC sustainable, we need to consider the following: Revenue Profit Best practices/benchmarks Payer groups/payer mix Business goals and standards Expenses Competition Business practices based on good practice data Practitioner/staff accountability Business-related protocols Strategic plans Community involvement

ANTHEM FOUNDATION OF OHIO ORAL HEALTH CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT Essential elements for sustainability Appropriate fee schedule (should not be below Medicaid) Well designed encounter form/superbill that easily collects the data needed for billing and reporting A well-designed and uniformly- enforced Broken Appointment policy An emergency/walk-in policy compatible with the appointment system (don’t let emergencies run the appointment book) Billing success of 95% of expected collections Efficient system for patient registration/eligibility documentation and updating Appointment system that allows multiple procedures (e.g., quadrant dentistry) to be done when appropriate Appointment system that allows the efficient use of EFDAs where allowed by law Patient Satisfaction
