Project Background ●Tests the wear and friction of materials ●Design a reciprocating sliding contact friction test rig o Ball-on-plate FRICTION TESTER PROJECT TWO TEAM COLLABORATIVE BUILD Group A Armature Subsystem P15660 Group B Reciprocation Subsystem P15661

Stakeholders Dr. Iglesias Victoria ●Primary stakeholder, sponsor and customer Other important stakeholders ●Friction tester reciprocating team (P15661)! o Communication between teams is key for success ●Our own team (P15660)! o Succeding is in our best interest ●Research students using her lab o Will be running experiments using test rigs

Benchmarking Rotating Friction Tester Located in Dr. Iglesias’s Lab ProsCons -Precision weights applied in vertical to contact point -Counterbalanced -Adjustable in X -Able to swing out for easy of use -Needs XYZ Adjustability -Strain gauge works for rotating specimen scenarios only -Not easy to use Most importantly, Dr. Iglesias wants TWO independent friction testers!!!

Problem Statement & Project Deliverables Current State: ●The reciprocating friction testers are too expensive, or not the current testing application Desired State: ●Fully functional reciprocating friction tester by the end of MSDII! Project Goals: ●Design and build an armature which will be attached to the reciprocating base made by P15561 team Constraints: ●The armature must provide constant & accurate vertical Normal Force o Weight of armature can’t affect normal force ●Single point contact force variable from 0N to 20N ●All data obtained must be stored and displayed ●Budget of $1500, $2500 shared between both teams

Use Scenario

Customer Needs and Wants Working reciprocating sliding contact friction test rig to be used in Dr. Iglesias’s lab by MSDII Design and build an armature to be combined with reciprocating base: ●$1500 budget (negotiable between teams) ●Apply a vertical normal force up to 20N ●Incorporate a zero force load release ●Easy to use (clean, adjust, run test, etc.) ●Translate in the XYZ planes

Customer Requirements Importance Scale: 9=must have, 3=nice to have, 1=preference only

Engineering Requirements Importance Scale: 9=must have, 3=nice to have, 1=preference only

Project Plan

Risk Management

Team Norms and Values ●Punctual ○Arrive at scheduled meetings on time ●Thorough ○Perform tasks thoroughly and completely ○Seek assistance in a timely manner ●Accurate ○Work is documented and easy to follow ●Professional and Ethical ○Give credit where it is due, be honest ●Conflict Resolution ○1 on 1 ○As a team ○Guide intervention

Problems Encountered and Lessons Learned ●Same strengths from same discipline - Be able to adapt and learn ●Take charge in the interview - don’t let the conversation topic stray from the question that was asked ●If customer gives contradictory answers, verify which is correct if there is a correct answer ●House of Quality ●Project Planning ●Stay ahead and dont fall behind on tasks

Action Items ●Establish interface requirements for LabView o EEs ●Get in contact with rotating disk tester research student o Experienced with operating test rigs o Can offer advice for ease of use ●Verify the roles of each team in the testing process (ie, who determines interface location? who is responsible for data acquisition, etc.)
