Welcome Pre-Employment Resource Program (PREP)

Funded by the State of California: Department of Community Service and Development. Sponsored by Community Action Partnership of Kern “PREP” sites: Friendship House (FHCC) in Bakersfield and the Shafter Youth Center (SYC) What is PREP?

PREP's Goal and Vision To EMPOWER 100 youth, ages 14-18, with the identification of necessary skills that can and will provide them with a head start in preparing to enter the workforce and or continue on to a higher educational institution or vocational training program.

PREP Format/Structure 10 Week Program Two days out of each week - 1½ - 2 hour sessions 1½ - 2 hour sessions All sessions will be presented by CAPK Program Educator and community professional experienced in their respective field. Have the PREP participant, in mind of their needs and goals (student focused).

What PREP provides? Career Development/Outlook Identifying Career Interest: College Majors, Certificated/Vocational Fields, Employment Outlook, Career Pathways and Success, etc. Employment Readiness Skills Job Skills: Hard and Soft Skills Defined, Uncovering Abilities, Skills and Talents, Resume Creating/Building, Interview Preparedness, Dress for Success, Mock Interviews, Ten Tips for Job Success, etc. Financial Literacy Awareness Establishing a Bank/Checking account, What/How to avoid (fees and charges), fraud protection, money management, budgeting, establishing credit, borrowing money, etc. Short Term Internship What are internships? Internship Interest Assessment, Expectations and Benefits. Placements, assessment and evaluation. ** Field trip to UCLA and much more

Workshop Schedule at a Glance This is a tentative look, please note, schedule is subject to change: Week 1: Orientation(Rules/Expectations, Financial Literacy 1 and Job Development Skills I Week 2: Financial Literacy 2, Job Development Skills II and Activity, Top Ten Tips for Job Success (TTTJS). Week 3: Uncovering Abilities, Talents and Skills Activity, Financial Literacy 3, Introduction to Resume Building

PREP at a Glance: Weeks Week 4: Financial Literacy 4 & 5, Continue Building Resume Week 5: Finalize Resume, Intro to Interview, Interview: Do’s and Don’ts & Types, PREP Jeopardy Week 6: Dress for Success, Financial Literacy 6 Internship Interest Assessment, Mock Interview Intro/Scheduling Week 7: Mock Interviews, Internship Placement and Rules and Expectations

PREP: Weeks Weeks will be the time where students will take part in their internships. PREP internship placement is work experience, allowing participant to earn valuable experience, All PREP internships are non-paid, expected to do 1-2 hours a week (three weeks) Interns become involved in a variety of tasks, from office procedures (filing, answering the telephone) to more complicated projects (planning and independently executing part of a company project). Possibility for future employment…You Bet!
