Presentation transcript:

Social Groups Our media product focuses on representing two social groups, which are girls and young people because our characters fit in both of those categories, however we tried to make sure that our characters challenged the stereotypical images of how they are usually presented to draw the audience in and to make our product a suspense and mystery filled thriller.

Gir ls Girls are usually presented as being the ‘Damsel in Distress’ in films because they normally need saving by a male hero and from a male villain. This is because they are portrayed as being vulnerable and innocent, therefore they are the perfect victims and hardly ever disliked. However, in our product we made sure we went against this stereotypical image and challenged it to make Carrie the villain and powerful. If girls are not represented as victims, they are sometimes only secondary characters and appear purely to support the male lead role as the story isn’t about them. In some cases they die out or disappear during the story or at the start. This is similar to our Opening Title Sequence as Eve dies at the start, however as the film is named after her, it would focus on her character in the rest of the story. When women are villains they are represented as being evil, however in our full product Carrie who is the supposed villain is not evil but instead she is creepy and mysterious which would keep the audience engaged.

Youn g Peop le Young people or teenagers are portrayed as being impulsive, irresponsible and immature due to their age. In some films they are presented as being weak and vulnerable as they are sometimes good victims, in some cases the audience would feel empathy if the character's harmed or killed because they are well liked. However, we present this social group to show that young people are not always popular, even if they are the main character as the audience would dislike Carrie for murdering someone, and they hadn’t had time to create a friendship with Eve before her death as she was also mysterious as she is hardly shown and her identity is kept secret. In films when young people are murderers, the audience are usually shocked because they are represented as being innocent. Sometimes they kill by accident or is committed as a spare of the moment thing as they are rarely cold-blooded serial killers. The only time this is usually the case is when someone has a mental breakdown or a mental illness. The audience would think that was the case as an argument happened before the murder, however after seeing Carries mysterious behaviour they might dismiss the thought. We wanted our product to be different and constantly create mystery and suspense.
