Law Journals’ Guide to the Library August 18, 2013

Objectives: Introduce you to: “Law Journals Guide to the Library” Review of different sources Go over Law Library’s procedures for checking out print items to journals

Finding Materials in the Law Library: Books Articles Newspapers Primary Law

Finding Things:

Books and other print materials are organized by LOCATION and CALL NUMBER If a Northwestern Library has an item, results will appear:

Basic Procedures for Checking Out Items: Set up journal proxies Checking out to journal accounts Use the journal shelves Return items

1. Setting Up Journal Proxies: Every journal article has an account in library’s circulation system –Example: NULR-Smith 107:3 Students must have permission from journal’s managing editors to check out materials for journal article –Managing editors need to Maribel Nash and Jennifer Lubejko (me!!!) as assignments created

2. What can I check out to the journal? From the Law Library, most of the items circulate, except: – Reference materials – Reserves – Reporters – Items labeled “Fed” – Annotated state codes – A/V materials – Rare Book Room items For other Northwestern libraries, it depends….

What if the item is not at the Law Library….or in storage? Schaffner (Kellogg) or Galter (Feinberg): Go the library Evanston libraries: Use “Request” feature for delivery Law Storage: Use “Request” feature

What if Northwestern does not have the book/article I need at all? Welcome to confirm with law librarian Will need to use Interlibrary Loan Use WorldCat to get OCLC number and list of owning librariesWorldCat ILL requests made by designated staff members

What if Northwestern has the book I need but it is checked out? Can recall or use interlibrary loan Before recalling, please check that book not already checked out to your journal –Log in to journal accounts –Check with circulation in person or by Use one method or the other

Ready to check out books? Bring books from Law Library or other Chicago libraries to circulation desk For books delivered from Evanston or from storage, you will receive an Bring your WildCard and ask to check out to journal article –If proxy not set up, we can hold items under your name at circulation desk for later retrieval

3. The Journal Shelves: On the 4 th floor of the Law Library Each journal has its own row of shelves Each article has its own shelf Only checked out items on the shelf! Use acid-free bookmarks for citations Keep journal books in the library! –Why? –What if I need to leave with book?

4. Return Books!!! When article published, journal board to determine procedure for returns Lost books = $$$ for journals Can use library’s carts –Availability –Need to hold WildCard –Please return cart by end of day
