DVD available from tutor Login to www.i-l-m.com and go to http://ilm.lms.crossknowledge.com/data/modules/crossknowledge/interfaces/campus.php?registration_id=13270&step_id=520 To summarise http://www.i-l-m.com/about-ilm/leadership-styles.aspx Leader Authoritative Consultative Supportive Delegate These are the 4 leadership styles referred to in the short questions. What do the heading mean in terms of leadership style?

Think for a moment of the benefits and drawbacks for each management style and include your thoughts in the table below by clicking into the corresponding text box. BENEFITS DRAWBACKS Authoritative Click here to begin Consultative Supportive Delegative

These are what we consider to be the main traits of each leadership style Authoritative Consultative Instructs and Directs Controls Allocates roles/responsibilities Supervises all activity States how tasks are to be done Gives instructions Offers feedback Monitors performance Will consider team members ideas

Styles Supportive Delegative Active team member Involves all in decisions Shares responsibility Allows team to make decisions Exchanges feedback to improve performance Steps away from the team Advises only when appropriate Delegates to the team

When to use each of the 4 styles? How would you use all 4 styles within your organisation? Write your answer here How may it impact on people and their performance? Write your answer here What can be learnt? Or developed? What can you do to promote these in yourself? What style are you? – Leadership hand-out

We considered that some behaviours matched some of the leadership styles If you need to TELL someone something [ Authoritative] If you need to SELL a concept to the team [Consultative] If you want the team to PARTICIPATE then be [supportive] If you want to ENABLE a team (under caution – see self directed teams) [delegative]

A leader must have the courage to act against an expert's advice Quotes Leadership is not a position. It is a combination of something you are (character) and some things you do (competence). A leader is someone you choose to follow to a place you wouldn't go by yourself If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. A leader must have the courage to act against an expert's advice The leaders who work most effectively think "we"; they think "team." Good leaders must first become good servants Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others, it is the only means “A leader is best when people barely know they exist, when their work is done, their aim fulfilled, people say: we did it ourselves.”

Leader’s promote creativity in the workplace When we think of leaders we know, how well are they at promoting creativity in the workplace? This means that new ideas are created to come up with solutions to current or future problems.. In order to promote ownership and a sense of responsibility, allowing a work team to find their own solutions is a key trait of good leadership. Follow the links on the next page to find out more…

When there are problems… look for solutions Creativity in the workplace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NugRZGDbPFU&feature=related Turning problems into solutions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb59hZ02MQc&feature=related

We also thought that this might be useful to you too… A self managed team… Organises the work Find solutions Allocating roles Dealing with customers The benefits to an organisation are? Improved performance Improved motivation Improved flexibility Improved quality Cost savings Reduce the amount of “chiefs”

Please copy and paste your reference link here… [ Evaluate your own development needs required to become a more inspiring leader and record on your SWOT analysis.

We thought that these could be used to empower teams… Training and coaching to develop talent Participation in decision making Involved in planning Giving feedback Delegation Job rotation What management style would you need to use to allow for self directed teams?
