Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher BTEC IT Unit 05 - Lesson 15 Network Tools and Utilities

Session Objectives Understand the need for network tools and utilities Understand the different types of networking tool Know specific examples of networking tools and what they can be used for

Types of Network Utility HINT: Think functions of network management

Overview Network tools and utilities are useful bits of software that allow network administrators to carry out their job Within P4 we looked at the different functions of network management Configuration, Fault Management, Account Management Maintaining Security, Performance Management and Reporting Network tools fall into different categories which assist in these functions being carried out successfully

Types of Network Tools Need network tools which can Maintain Network Security Find Faults Monitor Performance Report on Network Assets (Hardware, Users, Resources) Configure / Manage Network Assets (Hardware, Users, Resources)

Read pages 9 and 20/21 of the “unit 05 BTEC book” Read pages 15 of the “alternative unit 05 BTEC book” Produce a poster which summarises one type of Network Tool and Utility from the list. Consider: What the tools in the category are for? What tasks do the tools allow us to perform – give examples of tasks? How do these tools help network managers? Is it important that these tasks are carried out – what happens if we don’t do them? How could we carry our similar tasks without the use of network tools? Present your findings to the rest of the group

Assignment Link Produce a guide entitled “An Introduction to Networking Tools” Include within your guide you need to write an overview of each type of networking tool What the tools in the category are for? What tasks do the tools allow us to perform – give examples of tasks? How do these tools help network managers? Is it important that these tasks are carried out – what happens if we don’t do them? How could we carry our similar tasks without the use of network tools? Include specific examples of tools and utilities for each category including what they can do and screen shots demonstrating their use.

Examples of Network Utilities Find out what these network utilities are used for. Which category do each belong in? HINT: The reading list will help your research CiscoWorks

Describe tools used for fault management, performance management and other uses. Examples of tools to include are HP Openview, CISCO Works and Wireshark. As well as a description include screen shots showing how each tool can be used. P2 - Outline the purpose of networking tools

Using Network Utilities adads

Documenting Network Assets Date / Time Device Name TypeIPMACServicesStatus Utility software can be used to interrogate network assets to find out properties of each device Using different utilities will allow us to find out different properties Results from the utilities can be complied into two documents A diagram showing how assets interconnect logically A table to show the properties of each asset
