IOP’s say to whom something is for. (Person or thing affected by the action, but directly acted upon) Question to ask yourself: for whom/what is the object?? ▪ Ex. I write him a letter.

When we use le or les, we can be referring to many people…so we need to specify who we’re talking about… To do this we use a personal “a”
