Goals To increase the accessibility and appropriate utilization of Elsevier content for our customers To simplify life for our customers

Challenges Access Search mechanisms Branding concerns

Access Would be available at Elsevier-licensed sites Need to develop appropriate intermediary authentication mechanisms Requires identification as authorized robot Need to develop resource descriptions to guide appropriate searching

Search mechanisms Currently support XML gateway Moving quickly towards Web service model (SOAP) XQuery-based query language (would contribute) Query wrapper for result set metadata All information transferred in XML Elsevier data model plus support for Dublin Core Need to insure appropriate searching and monitoring of search traffic Need to handle any unsupported features Need mechanism to handle updates to service Need to understand incremental costs (development, searches, monitoring, support)

Branding concerns Need appropriate recognition that Elsevier content is being searched Quality of search reflects on Elsevier Availability Relevancy of results Performance Appropriate access to advanced features Quality of result display and result attribution are important Need fair ranking of results Need fair resolution of duplicates
