HOW TO COMPARE IN ENGLISH. When we compare two things, we must pay attention to the syllables of the adjectives:

COMPARISON We use comparative adjectives to compare two people, places or things

SHORT ADJECTIVES (regular) When the adjective is short, you add the suffix –er to the base form. Eg. “Peter is taller than Ben.” “ Jane is older than Becky.”

SHORT ADJECTIVES (irregular) We change the word. Base form Comparative form goodbetter badworse farfurther Eg. “In my opinion, Ford is better than Renault”

LONG ADJECTIVES We add “more”,”less” before the adjective. Eg: “English is more difficult than Italian” “ Julia Roberts is more beautiful than Britney Spears” “Tennis is less interesting than football”

SPELLING Adjectives ending in “e”: base form + “r” Eg: close (closer) Adjectives ending in a vowel and a consonant: base form, double the consonant + “-er” Eg: big (bigger) Adjectives ending in “y”: change “y” by “i”+”er” Eg: happy (happier)
