3 Full Service Community School District Create a district that fosters community schools Implications for Facilities Department: – Consider the full spectrum of community facilities and support opportunities for joint-use and educational partnerships – Provide these services as a sustainable community benefit: limit greenhouse gas emissions, optimize construction and life cycle costs, and encourage walking and bicycling

4 Sustainability Coordinator In 2011, OUSD intends to establish a Sustainability Coordinator Position: – Improve energy efficiency, track and reduce greenhouse emissions related to energy, and integrate sustainability – Project Management Plan. Prioritize measures Develop and implement behavioral supports  institutional change – Green Academy programs. Integrate school-based initiatives with district goals.

5 5 Green Buildings Collaborative for High Performing Schools In 2007, adopted California’s Collaborative for High Performance Schools (“CHPS”) as green building standard for all modernization and new construction. One of ONLY 45 Districts in California (out of 1000+) First district in California to receive State matching grants for verified green school buildings OUSD expects to receive approximately $600,000 in additional State matching grants for CHPS projects in

9 Solar America Showcase The grant has allowed Oakland, Berkeley, and West Contra Costa Unified School Districts to receive up to $500,000 in technical assistance from U.S. Department of Energy to conduct comprehensive solar generation analyses of district schools and facilities and to develop Solar Master Plans for each District.

10 Expected Results: Solar America Study Installing photovoltaic systems designed to produce 75% of consumption (thus “zeroing out” a building’s electricity expense), is estimated to produce: Annual savings: $2,868,123 Annual electricity production: 15,095,386 kWh Annual greenhouse gases avoided: 3,834 metric tons Annual Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) earned: 15,095

15 Energy and Water Conservation Energy Usage: All new construction emphasizes low energy and efficiency. Minimum of 40 points in the CHPS scorecard New classrooms are built without air conditioning as standard. Water Conservation: On-site retention of storm water in all new projects. Re-use of stored storm water for irrigation where feasible.

16 Nutrition Services Master Plan Nutrition services is rolling out a master plan for the following initiatives and goals: Develop and utilize a sustainable local food system Expand composting and waste diversion in Nutrition Services Model and utilize urban agriculture Promote healthy consumption
