Why Center-Based Instruction? All instructional methods are not equally effective for all students. National Research Council (2003) Teaching should focus on building proficiency. National Research Council (2003) Children feel more empowered over their learning with center-based instruction. Making choices Approach tasks in their own learning style Engage in meaningful and active learning.

What is Center-Based Instruction? Learning centers are areas of the classroom which can be used to introduce, develop, reinforce, or extend a concept or to facilitate development of skills. Learning centers utilize brain-based principles of active learning and constructivism which supports the student's exploration, application and explanation of new information. Individual student learning styles can be addressed through the variety of activities and choices available in the centers which motivate students to become more independent, self-directed and responsible for their own learning.

Three Areas of Center-Based Instruction Teacher preparation – Planning is the key to success in developing quality and effective learning centers. Center Preparation – Each center must be carefully organized. Student Preparation – Because center work is independent, students need to know how to become independent learners.

Teacher Preparation Determine the goals and objectives Select appropriate activities Plan activities that reach all the students and on varying levels of difficulty Determine student accountability Develop assessment procedures. Collect needed material and resources. Develop directions and rules for using the center. Organize a management system How students will move through the center How many students can be at the center at any given time

Center Preparation Set up the center so that objectives, materials, resources and accountability measures are available. Clearly identify the center with bright, colorful labels or decorations. Centers should be neat, attractive and inviting. Make sure rules and directions are clear and understandable with appropriate pictures or graphics.

Student Preparation Emphasize good work habits, responsibility and self-discipline. Introduce students to each center, explaining the goals, objectives, procedures and how they will be held accountable for their work. Explain use of materials and resources.
