General Education Requirements NYSED, SUNY, Suffolk

What is General Education? General Education courses must be rooted in the liberal arts and sciences. According to NYSED, “The required liberal arts core shall not be directed toward specialized study or specific occupational or professional objectives.”

General Education Degree Requirements A.A. ¾ of the work for the A.A. shall be in the liberal arts and sciences A.S. ½ of the work for the A.S. shall be in the liberal arts and sciences A.A.S. 1/3 of the work for the A.A.S. shall be in the liberal arts and sciences

General Education and SUNY All baccalaureate degree candidates must complete a 30-credit hour General Education Requirement. Students must take approved courses from 7 of 10 knowledge and skills areas to attain a SUNY baccalaureate degree: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, American History, Western Civilization, Other World Civilizations, Humanities, The Arts, Foreign Language, Basic Communication. Two of the areas must include Basic Communication and Mathematics. (Approved course can be found on the College’s website and are designated in the catalog.) Students must also demonstrate competency in Critical Thinking and Information Management which are infused throughout the General Education program.

General Education and Suffolk Students in A.A. and A.S. degree programs must satisfy the following requirements: ENG101 and ENG102 Humanities (9 credits and only one course may be English) Social Sciences (9 credits and must include at least one semester of History) Mathematics Science (1 lab science course) P.E. (2 credits) Freshman Seminar (1.5 credits)

General Education and Suffolk Students in A.A.S. degree programs must satisfy the following minimum requirements: ENG101 and 3 credits of an English elective Humanities (3 credits of any humanities course other than English) Social Science (6 credits) Mathematics/Science (2 math and/or lab science courses) P.E. (2 credits) Freshman Seminar (1.5 credits)

General Education and Suffolk MOU between community college presidents and SUNY stipulates that campuses should design AA and AS programs to enable students to complete as much of the SUNY-GER as feasible. Whenever practical, campuses should include a total of 30 credits of SUNY-GER in these programs, with flexibility for students to select SUNY-GER areas that fit their transfer goals. include as many SUNY-GER knowledge and skills areas as feasible, including Basic Communication and Mathematics, in their AAS programs

Suffolk GE/SUNY GE Not all Suffolk General Education courses are necessarily SUNY APPROVED GE courses. SUNY GE courses must demonstrate adherence to SUNY Learning Outcomes (including outcomes for Critical Thinking and Information Management) and participate in SUNY Campus-Based Assessment. To have a course approved as a SUNY GE course, a proposal must be sent through the Governance process.
