MAIN POINTS To find the relevant information from material you are reading it is a good idea to highlight or underline the main points that carry the information. Pick out the main points in the following example:

EXAMPLE: Write Jane a note and tell her tomorrow’s meeting is cancelled but we’ll still need her report by 10am. Now pick out the key words

You should have: Write Jane a note and tell her tomorrow’s meeting is cancelled but we’ll still need her report by 10am.

ACTIVITY TWO – pick out the key words The daily newspapers are engaged in a bitter sales battle. Some newspapers reduce their prices to try to sell more papers. Others give special offers on travel if you collect a set of tokens day by day. One even sometimes gives away free plants if you send away the tokens in the newspaper.

YOU SHOULD HAVE The daily newspapers are engaged in a bitter sales battle. Some newspapers reduce their prices to try to sell more papers. Others give special offers on travel if you collect a set of tokens day by day. One even sometimes gives away free plants if you send away the tokens in the newspaper. NOW SUMMARISE THE TEXT

Possible answer? Newspapers are in competition by reducing prices of papers and offering tokens for travel and even plants. or Competing papers reduce prices and offer tokens for travel and plants.

Activity Three: It used to be setting the video recorder that baffled parents but came as second nature to their offspring; today it's downloading music from the internet. But charities and record labels around the world yesterday launched a campaign to make it clear to parents that their ignorance would be no defence in court if their children were found sharing illegal files.

Remember? Copy the highlighted points. Write up a list.
