Incorporating FCCLA National Programs into Classroom Curriculum Andrea Loggins Brookland Junior High School Brookland, Arkansas

Get students on board early! Start in the introductory FACS courses Family and Consumer Sciences 7 th /8 th Grade Course (In Arkansas: Family CSI) Introduce National Programs into lesson plans Helps build the FACS program Help build the FCCLA chapter Easy to work into the frameworks Add in some math and literacy to integrate core academic classes.

Works great into the FACS curriculum. Can use during units related to individual or family health. Can start small with the completion of one module and work students up to completing all 5. Provide incentatives for FCCLA members who complete Power of One lapel pins available on FCCLA website.

Can be put into the FCCLA unit in FACS Leadership in Service Learning class Complete some or all modules. Great intro into service based learning. Chance for FCCLA members to receive State and National recognition. Lapel pins available on the FCCLA website.

Start early! Provide each participant with their own individual event portfolio Use a folder to help students stay organized inside pack it with: All event information Rubrics Anything pertinent to their event straight from the most current STAR Events Manual To Do List I create each event a mini to-do list which help guide and direct the students so they dont feel so overwhelmed. FCCLA Purposes Due Dates/Important Dates to Remember

Focus on Children Includes great elements from the child development and parenting curriculum. Work this event in as a class project Use event rubric as a guide to create a criterion based grading scale rubric. Group or individual project Great end of the semester project Encompasses many past learned skills and concepts from the whole course. Can scale down the project down to use in FACS course By completing projects in class it may inspire students to join the FCCLA chapter.

Life Event Planning Use in consumer education unit of FACS or in the semester long Personal Family Finance course. Students will have to use what they learned about needs, wants, and values and put that knowledge into practice. Students can use the Internet to do comparison shopping method during a class period. This event turned into a project will incorporate basic math skills and literacy skills when putting the portfolio together. Gives students some price shock when calculating just how much it costs to move out on their own or redecorating their room. Opens up discussion for furthering education and the importance of a solid future career.

Entrepreneurship Have students create a business using the guidelines in the entrepreneurship event of the STAR events manual. It is great for the creative students Allows for integration of skills learned in Math, English, and Business Education classes. This can be used in FACS or Personal Family Finance Great in Foods and Nutrition class for them to design a business based on a venue that sells food. The product could be prepared one day as a food lab. Fellow classmates can perform taste tests on products produced by the business.

Shows students how to apply what they learned in the FACS curriculum as a way to help improve real life situations. Allows students to network with people in the community. School and community are working together for common goal. Examples: Our local FCCLA is helping to collect books to start our small towns local library. Students are organizing community and local food drives to assist with the backpack program on campus.
