- 1 - The National Assembly Library of Korea digitizes its resources and collects digitalized resources from external governmental and educational institutions online in full-text. The purpose of the database is to enhance legislative information service and to efficiently distribute information and knowledge to the citizens of Korea. Through the software and hardware development and expansion, the National Assembly Library of Korea consolidates its information service capability in terms of stable, rapid, and convenient information circulation and utilization. 1. Overview

- 4 - O Academic and Legislative information cooperation - Cooperative agreements: with 582 institutions (began in 2000) - Details * Collecting digital files from 582 cooperative organizations including governmental and public institutions, local assemblies, and universities and provide on the National Assembly Digital Library full-text database service Promoting the partnership in the library informatization services by operating Academic Information Exchange Council 2. - 6 - From Research on the usage of the major national information system by the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs To support the legislative activity by digitalizing the needed information such as seminar materials, current issues, policy research for the legislative process To abridge the information gap and make easier access to the information by sharing the digitalized information with universities, public libraries and the National Assembly Library To save the expenses by using the information from a distance 3. Evaluation of the Digital Library Project

- 7 - To hold the largest collection of the full-text database in Korea, make agreements with the largest number of organizations for cooperation, have the biggest number in user's information usage o The National Assembly Library has the information-based system which holds the high-qualified collection domestically and internationally needed for the legislative activity including the research reports and policy-related materials as the largest information keeper and provider 3. Evaluation of the Digital Library Project

- 8 - To provide the Virtual Reference Service on the internet (The Project for establishing the Virtual Reference Room) - To utilize the reference materials including the dictionary, encyclopedia, statistics, white books, and etc through the internet - To enhance the Digital Library system as the information provider by adding the Virtual Reference Service 4. Future Goals

- 9 - Establishment of the Internet Information Resource Management System - To collect the needed information for the legislative activity and state-affairs inspection among the scattering information on line and create them into the national bibliography in NAL. - To establish the Legislative Information Portals in connect with the legislative related sites to provide the information only when they are not against the related laws (copyright law) Execution of Ask the Librarian Service - To set up a plan of the Ask the Librarian Service which the librarians receive and answer the user's inquires on demands quickly and correctly through the online 4. To strengthen the support of the legislative activity by providing the needed information for members efficiently To keep the high-qualified integrated information services by creating user-centered database To expand the usage by making easier access to the information To save the national budget for preventing the overlapped investment To decreasing the information gap between the developed and undeveloped areas 5.
