Cultural Heritage in REGional NETworks REGNET Digitising approach (ALI)

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 Contents Here you will find some suggestions coming from experience and huge efforts. This document is strictly reserved.

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 All imagery should be scanned on a drum scanner or a professional level flatbed scanner or back-camera to insure a high quality digital file. A comparison is necessary trough periodical prints such as digital Cromalin. To spare money use a good color ink-jet printer which is more stable.

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 Scanning and/or image manipulation should occur on a calibrated monitor with the following characteristics: White Point: 6500º Kelvin, Gamma: 1.8. Files should be scanned and saved in RGB, as TIFF files, with no compression.

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 Images that have been digitally composed in Photoshop must adhere to the same quality standards, i.e.: no visible clipping paths or gaps, undetectable use of cloning, proper and professional cleaning, spotting and cropping.

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 A digital output of a digital file cannot be scanned to meet good standards of image quality (any post process causes loss).

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 If no color correction is possible in a color space larger than 8-bit (i.e. composite images manipulated in Photoshop) care must be taken as to not posterize the image or create out of gamut printing colors. Alpha channels should be removed.

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 Image files should be embedded with a profile of the scanner it was scanned on or the color space in Photoshop it was worked on: Adobe RGB 1998 is widely used. The ICC profile is crucial. The whitest point in an image should not exceed a digital value of 252, and the blackest point in an image should not be below 5-6. This can be checked in Photoshop using the Histogram feature. Individual color channels should not be clipped.

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 Time is expressed in minutes File size (RGB) Compressed file size 56kISDN 2MB k1-3< 1 15MB1-3MB6-18< 6 30MB2-5MB11-22< 12

Barcellona Meeting Sam H. Minelli(ALINARI) Jan 2002 Last but not least: take care of the relation between the size of the image its resolution and the troughput of your connection And … Watermark it, if you want to save it.
