Phare SL New Approach Directive laying down E.R. to avoid or reduce any risk to health and safety of operators and other exposed persons Risks to be considered for normal and abnormal (foreseeable) use : mechanical hazard, radiation, high temperature, fire, electricity, noise, vibrations, emissions of gases or dust, etc. Machinery put on the EEA market or put into service Machinery Directive 98/37/EC

Phare SL Scope (I) Assembly of linked parts or components, at least one of which moves, joined together for a specific application Machinery can only be marked with CE if : it is ready for use by the end user it can function independently without the help of any other machinery or component in order to fulfil its function, apart from the supply of energy Machinery Directive 98/37/EC

Phare SL Scope (II) Applies to two families of products : Machinery and similar equipment (assembly of machines or complex installation, interchangeable equipment) safety components Machinery Directive 98/37/EC

Phare SL Interrelations with EMC and LVD Risks mainly of electrical origin  exclusively covered by Low voltage Directive 73/23/EEC e.g. : video recorder, copier, hair dryer Risks mainly of non electrical origin  MD e.g. : washing machine Electrical products under scope of MD or LVD also fall under scope of Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive 89/336/EEC amended Machinery Directive 98/37/EC
