Cloud Computing – a view from the Network cloud Martin Swany

How does Cloud computing change our world? In one sense, not at all Network metrics still important (NM-WG) Network models still important (NML-WG) In another sense, this work becomes even more critical Network metrics arent exported from commercial networks! Network structures arent visible – Will you outsource to a network into which you have no visibility?

Networks as a Resource Were good at controlling the compute and storage resources in the cloud But what about the cloud itself? Control of networks as a resource has been discussed in this community for quite some time GHPN-RG, new WG under investigation Is treating the network as a another manageable, schedulable resource critical functionality for Cloud computing or not? Some say we should wait for the capacity to increase

Network Capacity – heads in the clouds Network capacity is like processor capacity They keep getting faster and cheaper Performance increases are easier in the core than at the edge Cloud computing will (further) complicate peering relationships between providers Just wait for your ISP to buy more bandwidth Cloud computing will cause traffic characteristics to change quickly There are economic issues that are largely hidden (with recent network neutrality discussions bringing them to light.)

Dynamic Circuit Networking Internet2 GEANT2 and ESnet are deploying interoperable dynamic networks enabling the automated set up and connection of short-term, point-to-point circuits the goal is to provide an automated reservation system to enable users to request circuits either on-demand or as schedulable resource. Participating in the NML-WG and using pre-standard schema for topology exchange
