Presentation transcript:

four slides for the future Thomas Krichel given at 4 th International Socionet seminar Novosibirsk

Achievements Pioneered distributed open access digital scholarly libraries. Worked on RePEc which is a big system. Key to RePEc success is the RePEc Author Service. The service gives a sense of achievement to the author. This fuels document input.

Problems RePEc only works in one discipline and therefore is not widely known outside. To generalize it to other disciplines, you have to do the same job all over again in another context. The only certainty that I have to believe that it will be done is that without discipline-based bibliographic aggregates, open-access publishing will not develop in significant ways in the near future

Users Most digital libraries have a strong distinction between users and providers. Google crowds out proprietary interfaces. The digital library of the future will be more based on P2P interaction between user/providers. Examples in RePEc: – NEP: New Economics Papers – RePEc author service (stage 2 & 3)

to build a system like RePEc for computing and library and information science I need to collect documents. I have a new system, called the Konz project. It tries to find full-text of papers in computer science, as listed by DBLP, on the Web. Problems – full-text objects fail to convert to text, so I can not find the – many full-texts can not be found practical obstacles
