Problems in Africa

ZIMBABWE Zimbabwe is in the midst of a power struggle. The president, Robert Mugabe, who has been in power for the last 24 years is not popular and is attempting to do anything it takes to stay in power. His political party controls the press so that people around the world don't hear of the abuse he is imposing on the citizens who oppose him.

South Africa The impact of the AIDS epidemic is shown in the dramatic change in South Africas mortality rates. The overall number of annual deaths increased from 1997, when 316,559 people died, to 2006 when 607,184 people died.

MALAWI The economy of Malawi is mostly agricultural, with about 90% of the population living in rural areas. The country in south central Africa ranks among the world's least developed countries. Thankfully help is at hand that has been shown by North Berwick High School who recently went to Malawi with the Music for Malawi Project.
