What is CTE? Career and Technical Education (CTE) gives high school students the opportunity to receive technical and academic training that is career- focused: 3-4 year sequence of courses Work-based learning experiences (i.e. internships, job shadows) Participate in a Capstone competition or showcase of their work Exposure to career and college options in the career pathway Receive industry recognized certifications 2 Office of Pathways to College and Careers

CTE programs are not your fathers vocational education programs CTE programs at CPS are very different from traditional vocational programs Contrary to popular belief, CTE programs are not a track for low performing students CTE programs lead to multiple post- secondary options, including college 3 Office of Pathways to College and Careers

College enrollment for CTE completers in 2011 was 3.4 percentage points higher than the district average 4 Office of Pathways to College and Careers

CTE Completers had the highest high school graduation rate, even students that had exposure to 1 or 2 CTE courses graduated at higher levels than the district 5 Office of Pathways to College and Careers

CTE offerings provide college-prep options with hands-on experiences CTE Selective Academies: Oracle/Database Programming Cisco Networking Pre-Engineering Law Health Sciences (after freshmen year) Select students based on total score on GPA and total stanines Office of Pathways to College and Career 10

In todays market the career-prep options require some type of post-secondary instruction as well Some of the career-ready options include: Diesel Technology Auto Body Repair Cosmetology Machine Technology HVAC and Refrigeration Most academies select students by lottery. Preference: Total math and reading comprehension stanines of 5 or better (except Dunbar) Special Education and Bilingual Education get preference when their stanine totals are 10 or better Attendance area Office of Pathways to College and Careers 11

CTE offers programs that can lead to career and/or college options for students Many CTE programs can lead to career and/or college options for students. Such programs include: Health Science (Practical Nursing Program) Digital Media Agricultural Mechanics & Technology Hospitality Management Most academies select students by lottery. College & Career Academy Application Deadline: Dec 14, 5pm Track E – last day before break Reg Track – 1 week before break Apply online – apply.cps.edu 4 page application Up to 5 academy choices No duplicate apps Modification forms Do not include: Grades / ISATs for students that were enrolled in a non-charter CPS school last year IEPs/504s 15

Timeline of Key Events Application Application period begins Oct 1 st and ends Dec 14 th Online application Selective Law & Public Safety, Medical & Health Careers, Cisco Networking IT, Database Programming IT and Pre-Engineering Students will be ranked according to GPA and stanines Schools receive applicant list – End of December Offers Notification letters mailed out week of February 18, 2013 Can receive up to 5 CTE offers Response Students must ACCEPT an offer made in order to secure seat Students must notify Office of Access and Enrollment (OAE) and students counselor of selection Student ACCEPTANCES must be returned via mail or in person by week of March 11, Office of Pathways to College and Careers
