Ashley and Miguel were excited about the class science project. Teams of students each buried an apple in the ground and observed it decompose over time. One team noticed that the apple decomposed more readily in clay soil than in sandy soil.

Other students found the warm, moist conditions made the apple decay more quickly. All the young scientists were glad they had magnifying lenses to help them better view small changes. The experiment encouraged students to start compost heaps at home.
