3rd Declension –I stem Nouns If a noun falls into one of these categories, it is a Third Declension I-stem Noun 1. The same number of syllables in the genitive as in the nominative : Nominative Genitive Gender Meaning Civis, civis mas citizen ↓ ↓ (2 syllables ) (2 syllables)

2. Nouns of one syllable in nominative whose base ends in two consonants: It means, after you cross out –is from genitive, the stem must ends in two consonants. Nominative Genitive Gender Meaning Nox noctis fem night

3. Nouns of one syllable whose Nominative ends in –ns or –rs: Nominative Genitive Gender Meaning Pars partis fem part Mons montis mas mountain
