Databases – Part 1 Starter 1 – What is a Database? A database is information organized in such a way that a computer program can quickly select pieces of data. 1.What will a doctors surgery, a school and The Police use a database for? 2.What type of information will be stored? 3.How would having a database benefit the school and doctors surgery?

Databases – Part 1 Overview You are the manager at a mobile phone shop. A System Analyst was invited into your business and conducted an investigation into the way data is managed. The System Analyst used the following techniques to collect the relevant information on the current system: Observations: This involves the systems analyst walking around the organisation or business, watching how things work with his own eyes. Interview: The systems analyst can interview key people within the system to find out how it works. Questionnaires: He asked the customers to complete a questionnaire to gauge their feedback on the current system. Collecting Documents: He look at the current paper based database for customer records. Conclusion: To improve the efficiency of managing the data a computer database must be created so that customer sales records can be stored electronically. Unit Overview
