Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Hospital Facility Needs Assessment Proposal

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Scope: Along the I-35 corridor in central Texas Specifically Travis & Williamson Counties

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Summary: To determine if the current hospital system in Travis and Williamson Counties is adequate for present conditions and future growth using spatial and demographic analysis

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions ● Determine regional hospital bed capacity per capita versus bed capacity in other Texas counties ● Determine existing hospital service areas using various spatial techniques ● Analyze demographic makeup of each hospital’s service population ● Analyze spatial adequacy of current hospital locations ● Analyze bed capacity within service areas ● Determine if any spatial or demographic-specific service inequalities exist ● Provide recommendations for future development Purpose:

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Data: Types of Data -County -Road Network -Hospital Data -Location -Bed Count -Census Block Demographics Sources of Data -ESRI Census 2000 Tiger/Line Data -CAPCO -Medline Hospital Search

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Methodology: The hospital and roads information will be used to divided the Williamson/Travis counties region into hospital service areas. This data will be used to determine the adequacy of the current healthcare services by determining the number of beds compared to the number of people in each hospital service area. Then with the new data we will make suggestions on expanding current hospitals and locate possible locations for new hospitals.

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Data processing Census block demographic data - will need to be limited to Travis and Williamson counties. For the purposes of analysis, the census block data for these counties will then need to be changed from a vector to raster file format. Hospital data - acquired from the Medline Plus Hospital Directory will be entered into a database file. Then the hospital addresses will be geocoded to produce a point layer of general health facilities. Roads layer - will be used to simulate a transportation layer by using the speed limit attribute as a weighting factor. This layer will then need to be rasterized for a shortest path-analysis.

Cen-Tex Geodata Solutions Implications First, a population estimate will be derived for the service area of each individual hospital. Then, general demographic characteristics of the regions that they overlapped by the service areas will be determined. Based upon the current demographic characteristics of the individual hospital service areas and general health statistics, we will make suggestions on how to facilitate sustainable healthcare as a large percentage of the population ages.
