Presentation transcript:

Part of successful cataloging involves proper labeling. Included here are some visual examples of ways to label your correlated materials to Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Academic Content Standards, also known as the 658 Tags in your MARC records. A sample of how to label materials that are correlated to ODE Academic Content Standards

Color-Coded Key Each content area is designated by a certain color paper (located on both the spine and the materials back, lower right-hand corner): Royal Blue=Social Studies Neon Green=Science Light Blue=Math Purple=Foreign Language Bright Pink=Fine Arts Gray=Technology Brown=Library Green=English/Language Arts Back, lower-right hand corner Spine

Why Color-Code? By color coding materials: –Students gain a visual connection to the Dewey Decimal System. –Teachers can easily see correlated materials for a given content area.

Spine Labeling For the spine labels type the grade levels that are correlated to the specific material. You may wish to have a template document saved for easily inserting grade levels and then print them on the color- specific paper (see next slide for an example of this).

Example of Template Document This is an example of one way to create and save a Word document and change the text boxes during each labeling process. A are the text boxes that go on the back of the material. B is the spine label with the grade level standards that the material meets. C is the title of the book to help keep all information together when applying labels. A B C

Spine Labeling ODE Academic Content Standard correlating labels can be placed on non- fiction and fiction materials. Here is an example of both. FictionNon-Fiction

Labeling the Back of the Material In the right-hand corner, a small square or rectangle (see images below) lists the abbreviated standards with the benchmark and indicator.

What does this look like in the Catalog? By clicking on the tab Full Description, the 658 tag and all the curriculum standards linked to that item can be shown by simply scrolling down the page (see next slide).
