Increasing Poverty Rate Relatively Young Staff Shrinking Budget/FTE Challenges Increasing Poverty Rate Relatively Young Staff Shrinking Budget/FTE Sustainability Mindset

JYMS Building SLO School Learning Outcome: Over the course of the 2014 -15 school year, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will demonstrate an average increase in their MAP Reading scores by increments of 9, 7 and 6 points respectively on the Fall 2014 to Spring 2015 MAP assessment. Rationale: The average MAP growth from the past two years was 8.4 in grade 6. 6.3 in grade 7 and 5.3 in grade 8. The diminishing growth is a reflection of the test’s ceiling. Because the MAP score is a reflection of three components, (Literature, Informational Text, and Foundational Skills/Vocabulary), teachers will be able to attach to one of those three pillars with their individual SLO’s.

Aligning a Teacher SLO to a School SLO How do I use literacy in my subject area? Word of the Day Learning Logs Word Wall Cards Back Words, Mind Reader Word Sorts, Graphic Organizers

Aligning a Teacher SLO to a School SLO What area of literacy should I focus on to help my students grow in the area of literacy? What area of literacy will help my students access the mathematics curriculum more easily? Vocabulary SLO and PPG

Examples of Literacy Based SLOs Math: Vocabulary Decontextualization (to remove from a context) -numbers in a story problem Science: Writing a Scientific Explanation -claim (achievement SLO) -evidence -reasoning (growth SLO) Social Studies: Reading, Understanding and Analyzing Information Text -focus on reading and analyzing primary source documents in class Physical Education: Vocabulary
