Population: 3.8 million (over 115 ethnic groups): Tatars (52.4%) Russians (39.5%), Chuvashes (3.4%), Ukrainians, Udmurts, Mari, Bashkirs, Jews, etc. Tatarstan is a highly urbanised region, with the proportion of urban population being 74%. 3 Population of Tatarstan 3

The most widely-spread religions are Islam and Orthodox Christianity. Sunnite Islam was adopted as official religion in the Volga Boulgaria as early as in 922. The Orthodox Christianity appeared in the mid-16th century after the annexation of the Kazan Khanate by the Russian State. The followers of this religion are the Russians, the Chuvashes, the Mari, the Mordvinians, the Udmurts, and a part of the Tatars (kryasheny). Slightly propagated are Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism and Krishnaism. For many years of coexistence Tatarstan has been enjoying conditions of peaceful and good- minded dialogue between representatives of different religious communities. 4 Inter-Faith Consent 4

In September 2008, OAO Kazanorgsyntez commissioned the polycarbonate plant rated at 65,000 MT a year. This is the only polycarbonate production facility both in Russia and in the CIS. The Kazan factory is the world’s second after a Taiwan enterprise to manufacture "pure" polycarbonate (based on carbon oxide). Owing to their thermal and impact resistance and chemical inertness, polycarbonates are widely used in automotive and aircraft industries, the construction sector, electrical and electronic engineering, production of medical equipment, the children's goods, durable advertising structures, and other areas of consumer goods production. ОАО Nizhnekamskshina The largest Russian enterprise of tyre industry. Almost every third tyre produced in Russia comes from Nizhnekamsk. The company was established in 1971 as the main manufacturer of tyres for largest domestic automotive enterprises, VAZ and KamAZ, as well as to saturate the secondary market of tyres for passenger cars, trucks and agricultural machinery. The enterprise is capable of producing over 150 standard sizes of tyres for any operating conditions. 13

Total explored oil reserves: 900 million MT. For 10 months 2009 it is extracted 27 million MT. Total explored bituminous oil reserves: some 7 billion MT. Oil is produced by OAO Tatneft and 33 small oil-production companies (SOCs). SOCs produced totally over 6 million MT of oil with an annual output varying from 7,600 to 710,000 MT. 16 Crude Oil Production 16  Tatneft is one of the Russia’s leading oil companies.  Accumulated oil production is over 3 billion MT.  Annual volume of oil extraction is some 25 million MT(25.8 million MT in 2008).  In volumes of oil extraction, the company ranks 6th among Russian oil companies and 30th in the world.  Crude oil is extracted from 57 oilfields, the main one being Romashkinskoye, one of the world’s largest.  In volumes of proven reserves, (6,139.7 million bbls) Tatneft ranks 18th in the world.
