The most widely-spread religions are Islam and Orthodox Christianity. Sunnite Islam was adopted as official religion in the Volga Boulgaria as early as in 922. The Orthodox Christianity appeared in the mid-16th century after the annexation of the Kazan Khanate by the Russian State. The followers of this religion are the Russians, the Chuvashes, the Mari, the Mordvinians, the Udmurts, and a part of the Tatars (kryasheny). Slightly propagated are Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism and Krishnaism. For many years of coexistence Tatarstan has been enjoying conditions of peaceful and good- minded dialogue between representatives of different religious communities. 4 Inter-Faith Consent 4

In September 2008, OAO Kazanorgsyntez commissioned the polycarbonate plant rated at 65,000 MT a year. This is the only polycarbonate production facility both in Russia and in the CIS. The Kazan factory is the world’s second after a Taiwan enterprise to manufacture "pure" polycarbonate (based on carbon oxide). Owing to their thermal and impact resistance and chemical inertness, polycarbonates are widely used in automotive and aircraft industries, the construction sector, electrical and electronic engineering, production of medical equipment, the children's goods, durable advertising structures, and other areas of consumer goods production.
