Tarpeia By: Emad Alsamadi -Father (Spurius Tarpeius) was guard of outer gate of Citadel, Rome -Had a greedy eye (silver shiny ornaments) -Sabine War -Story of moral with greediness and betrayal

The Story It was a time of War against Sabines (From Central Italy) Sabines were surrounding the city Tarpeia went to obtain water from the public well Since Tarpeia had a “greedy eye” she seemed to talk to the men to look at their shiny ornaments (Bracelets, shields, etc) Soldiers knew she was daughter of a guard and realized that she was looking at their bright silver accessories Soldiers kept talking to her every day making her tempted Finally Tarpeia made a deal if they gave her the silver rings that they wore on their left arm The night finally arrived and Tarpeia got up to take her key while everyone was asleep to open up the gate The Sabines entered the city keenly The soldiers said “Take thy reward” and instead crushed her to the ground with his heavy shield Tarpeia was dead Sabines entered the city and marched over her dead body

Tarpeia’s Rock (Saxum Tarpeia) -Located on Capitoline Hill, off of a cliff -Used as a place for execution by the Roman Republic (Says a lot about what they thought about Tarpeia) -The dead men there were either murderers, traitors, perjurors, or Larcenous slaves -If they were convicted by the quaestores parricidii, they were thrown off of the cliff -People with mental or big physical disabilities had to have the same consequences of being “cursed by the gods” -The cliff was 80 feet tall
