Emperor of the French 1804 to 1815

Mother, Letizia Ramolino Father, Carlo Bonaparte

Napoleon’s personality had a significant impact throughout his career. Many factors helped him rise to fame and enhance his abilities; his almost hypnotic power over his peer group; his intellectual capacity; the ability to work for long periods continually; his iron will and irresistible charm all helped to establish himself at an early age as a very competent general.

Napoleon Bonaparte is chiefly remembered for two things, being a conqueror of no small ability and for being short. He’s sometimes cited as the chief example of supposed short man syndrome, whereby short people act more aggressively than their larger counterparts to make up for their lack of height. Napoleon is sometimes described as being 5 foot 2 inches tall, which would make him short for his era.

A few days prior to his death Napoleon had requested that his doctor make a full examination of his body, particularly of his stomach. The Emperor died at Longwood House in The doctors who carried out the post-mortem on Napoleon said that a perforated stomach ulcer that had turned cancerous was the main cause of his death. Initially Napoleon was buried on St Helena but his body was later removed and re-buried in Paris at the Invalides.
