Civil Air Patrol Inspector General College Integrity - Volunteer Service - Excellence - Respect Dedicated to Improving the Civil Air Patrol Origin and History of Inspectors General Overview of CAP and USAF Relationships Colonel Duddly Hargrove, CAP Civil Air Patrol Inspector General

The concept of the Inspector General came about when an inspector of infantry and an inspector of cavalry were appointed by Louis 14th, King of France. ( ) Origin Of The Inspector General

The Inspector General “The IG must have a horse and some soldiers to attend him and all the rest are commanded to obey and assist, or else the Army will suffer. For he is but one and must correct many, therefore, he cannot be beloved...” Article of War from King Charles I (circa 1629)

“The IG must have a COMPUTER AND and some LAWYERS to HELP him and all the rest SHOULD COOPERATE and assist, or else the CIVIL AIR PATROL will suffer. For THE IG is but one and must correct many, therefore, he PROBABLY WILL NOT be beloved...” The Inspector General (CAP Version)

Inspector General Origin in America During a staff meeting with his 14 general officers in October 1777, General George Washington directed the establishment of an Inspector General for the Army. British General Charles Cornwallis surrenders to American General George Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781, thus ending the American Revolution.

Inspector General Origin in America Baron Frederick von Steuben was accepted on a trial basis by General Washington and reported for duty at Valley Forge in the winter of Steuben known as the “father of the Inspector General System,” significantly influenced the Army’s ability to fight wars and win.

Inspector General Origin in America The use of the Inspector General system greatly improved following the Civil War, when the War Department published an order defining the duties of the IG The IG duties to inspect units deploying for combat overseas resurfaced during World War I and World War II

United States Air Force Inspector General The birth of the Air Force Inspector General mission occurred on January 6, 1948, as The Office of the Inspector General of the United States Air Force Major General Hugh Knerr was appointed by General Carl A. Spaatz as the first Inspector General of the Air Force An important legacy left by General Knerr is the enduring application of the best American business practices and the idea of the defense of the public trust from the very beginnings of the Air Force. That legacy lives on in today’s Air Force.
